Reasons to Consider Thyroid Treatment

Have you ever thought that you may have a metabolism problem? Issues with weight and energy could be a sign of a metabolism problem, but the actual cause for the issue may not have to directly be due to your metabolism at all. You may have a thyroid problem. The thyroid is a gland that sits just below the Adam’s apple on the front of your windpipe. Typically, when a thyroid is healthy, its size is small, and so you can’t feel it. However, if there is a problem with your thyroid, it can at times swell.

The thyroid is responsible for secreting certain hormones that play heavy roles in regulating your metabolism, the way you grow and develop, and your overall body temperature. When you were a child, a functioning thyroid also played an important role in the development of your brain.

Clearly, the thyroid is a simple structure that plays a key role in your overall health and happiness. So, when something goes wrong with it, like it starts to produce too much or too few of its hormones, your body could suffer. Sometimes these changes can be relatively harmless. Other times, however, it could lead to cancer. Understanding signs of certain thyroid problems could give you a leg up on when you should see a specialist and receive help.

Graves’ Disease

When too many hormones are produced, the condition is known as hyperthyroidism. One of the diseases popularly associated with hyperthyroidism is Graves’ Disease. Luckily, something like Graves’ Disease can be easily treated and managed. It isn’t uncommon for the problem to go into remission. However, if left untreated, the problem can become worse, and it could even cause death. As such, seeking treatment for Graves’ Disease is crucial.

Some of the symptoms you might experience with Graves’ Disease is a pounding heart, sweating, trembling, and weight loss. Another sign that you may be experiencing Graves’ Disease is if you notice problems with your eyes. The muscle that surrounds the eye may become inflamed or swollen. This can cause the eye to protrude from the socket. Not everyone who has Graves’ Disease will experience this particular symptom, however.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

In the case of hypothyroidism, when the thyroid produces too little of its hormones, the body is also greatly impacted. One autoimmune disease that can cause this to happen is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. In this disease, the immune system actually starts to attack the thyroid itself. The gland is then unable to produce hormones.

In this case, you may symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, constipation, inability to get warm, puffiness of the face, hair loss, and difficulties with menstruation.
